Description

Guinevere Gordon, nicknamed Gwen by close ones, but most often known as Jim, the odd Aberdeenshire boy who refuses to cut his hair.
Gwen is a 23-year-old girl of the 1700's, a Highlander soldier of Bonnie Prince Charlie's struggling army during the Jacobite Uprising.
While her disguise as a man is pitiful at best, her comrades turn a blind eye - with their small army, the Jacobites need all the manpower they can get, even if it means allowing girls among their ranks.
Lucky for them, Gwen is stronger than your average male, with the strength to take on three men single-handed. Fierce and unrelenting, she's a force to be reckoned with, and woe betide any fellow who gets in her way.
Gwen's also pretty handy with magic, but has to keep this particular secret a little more hidden. Plenty of folks still believe in witches, and Gwen doesn't want to fall victim to someone's superstitions.
She's also an ancestor of Esau (if you remember her, ha) - hence the likeness. Seems that the Edomist gene has popped up more than once in Esau's bloodline >:]
She's upbeat and positive despite recent tragedy in Culloden, a true idealist.

tl;dr - Meet Gwen, a manly Scottish girl who's handy with a sword.
MAN this picture was a bitch!
Originally, I was going to have Gwen opposite of Esau, so the whole thing made more sense. But after two days of drawing this thing and burning myself out, I gave up and ignored this for a few months.
I did end up using her for uni, actually - I already had her outlined with flat colours, so I quickly cel-shaded her (finally starting to nail vectors) and used her in a screenprinting assessment xD then I continued to ignore her.

Then today, I looked at the unfinished work and said "fuck it, I'll upload it as a WIP". But of course my brain went "Waaaiiiitttt I'll just add the fireball so she doesn't look too weird with her hand out of nowhere and oh wait maybe I'll use a black background to set off the firelight but HEY that means I have to add red lighting..."
So this kind of ended up being not so much a WIP. It's still pretty rushed though (the lighting is so shit asdfghjkl I was so lazy and the flames don't even look like flames anymore wth), and I still haven't finished Esau, so I'll say it's unfinished for now.

Oh, and I couldn't decide between the cel-shading or the soft-shading. So I kinda morphed them together. Her left leg (or is that right? Bahhhhh) isn't cel-shaded for some reason. Bah, that's my solution to everything, MUSH IT ALL TOGETHER.

Her costume is historically accurate, by the way. Of course, a sensible person would be wearing boots, not ghillies, but for some weird reason I decided to go with the ghillies.
And I modeled the sword off the William Wallace sword in Edinburgh Castle (rumoured to have belonged to W.W himself... if it did, then fuck me he was tall, the sword itself comes up to my shoulders).

And she's Gordon because whatever. I don't know if the Gordons were part of the Jacobite Uprising - that's something I'll have to do more research on. But my family's pretty involved with the Gordons so it seemed appropriate. More appropriate than putting her in Graham tartan. That woulda just been weird.

Also, girls didn't actually wear kilts and sporrans and shirts like that. They wore tartan dresses and similar. Kilts are traditionally menswear. So while it doesn't look weird to you guys seeing a girl in a skirt, to Scots back in the 1700's it would have been very weird. Bit of random fact-clarification there.

Anyhow, enough from me. I talk wayyyyy too much in these things.

Very wonderful character design! I really enjoy the design and the ferocity the character has. The hair is a beautiful addition. But, there is some thing I would suggest; getting rid of the outline of the eye in the hair. It really takes away from her face and doesn't even seem to match the other eye. Her expression gets across fine with only the one, so the outline is very redundant. Other than that, the piece is very well done and the character is amazing. Keep up the great work :)
